Byron and Evan invert the paradigmIn a collaboration inspired by the female
form, local artists Byron Tik (pictured on
the right) and Evan Malcolm (left) have
come together to exhibit their latest works.
‘Inverted’ will feature paintings by Tik and
photographs by Malcolm, all of which depict
the female body from a multitude of perspectives.
Exploring bodyscapes in rich reds and
contrasting black, both artists have aimed to
portray the figures as mysterious and opulent.
Almost theatrical, the figures are
painted or photographed suspended. In
Tik’s case, the figures are literally hanging
in air, intertwined in red ribbons. In Malcolm’s
macro body shots, he has employed
the power of extremely shallow depth of field
to suspend his semi-abstract body shapes in
ethereal darkness. Both artists depict female
forms that are both bold and weightless.
Byron Tik told The Echo, ‘By working
together in this way we got ourselves out of
our own way. Instead of our individual
monologues, the artistic process changed to
a dialogue. The work has been evolving and
we have been creatively bouncing off each
other, so much so that there will be more
collaborations of this kind to come.’
Evan Malcolm agrees, ‘We have intentionally
been pushing each other out of our
comfort zones, with interesting results. Both
of us have altered our approach somewhat
and it has been fascinating mixing the realms
of fine art and photography. Byron and I
have already decided to introduce more
mediums for future shows we may do
together.’
In an extra effort to unite the works of the
two artists, both have also been working
together to handcraft each picture frame.
‘Inverted’ will be shown at Retrospect
Gallery in Jonson Street, Byron Bay, from
June 27–July 12.
